Overview

Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts are located in Garhwal Mandal of Uttarakhand state of India and this circuit has Char Dham. The four temples included in this yatra are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is also known as Chhota Char Dham Yatra. All the holy places of Chhota Char Dham Yatra are dedicated to different Gods and Goddesses. Kedarnath Dham is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badrinath Dham is dedicated to Lord Badri or Vishnu. Gangotri Dham is dedicated to Mata Ganga and Yamunotri to Mata Yamuna. Every year lakhs of people visit here during the period from opening to closing of the doors. Yamunotri Temple is the first stop of Char Dham Yatra, after which Gangotri Temple and then Kedarnath Temple, the journey ends at Badrinath Temple.

According to Indian scriptures, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath are the holiest places for Hindus. They are also known as Char Dham. It has been said in the scriptures that the virtuous souls who succeed in visiting this place, not only their sins of this birth are washed away, but they are also freed from the bondage of life and death. It is also said in relation to this place that this is the place where earth and heaven unite. Pilgrims first visit Yamunotri (Yamuna) and Gangotri (Ganga) during this journey. Devotees perform Jalabhishek on Kedareshwar by taking holy water from here.

Among the Chhota Char Dham (discussed further in the Char Dham Yatra) temples located in the Himalayas, Badrinath is more important and popular. Apart from Badrinath, this small Char Dham includes Kedarnath (Shiva Temple), Yamunotri and Gangotri (Devi Temple). These four dhams hold their own separate and important place in Hinduism. In the middle of the 20th century, these four pilgrimage centers situated in the lap of the Himalayas were given the adjective ‘small’, which defines these shrines settled here even today. One has to climb up to a height of more than 4,000 meters to visit Chhota Char Dham.
